Tattoos are permanent images in the skin, delivered by needles injecting ink into the dermis. This tissue is just underneath the outer layer of your skin, called the epidermis. The ink is injected into the dermis by a machine that delivers thousands of tiny pricks per minute via needle. The ink-filled needles push colour into the skin, allowing the tattoo artist to create permanent designs, images and masterpieces. Modern tattoo machines work quickly; they can pierce the skin to inject ink at a frequency of up to 3,000 pricks per minute.
Because the tattooing process essentially creates tens of thousands of tiny wounds into a deep layer of skin, the procedure pushes the immune system into overdrive. When in healing mode, the body rushes a team of blood cells called macrophages to the site of the tattoo to remove the foreign substance (ink particles) that are now in the dermis. This process is complex: Macrophages are why tattoos fade over time AND part of what makes them permanent. Some macrophages swallow ink particles and send them out through the lymphatic system. However other macrophages remain in the dermis and allow the injected ink to remain visible. This process can help explain how tattoos fade over time.
Before you get a tattoo, think carefully about it. If you're unsure or worried that you might regret it, give it more time. Don't allow yourself to be pressured into getting a tattoo, and don't get a tattoo if you're under the influence of alcohol or drugs.
Choose the location of the tattoo carefully. Consider whether you want the option to hide your tattoo under clothing. Also remember that weight gain — including pregnancy weight gain — might distort the tattoo or affect its appearance.
Because tattoos breach the skin, skin infections and other complications are possible, including:
o Allergic reactions. Tattoo dyes — especially red, green, yellow and blue dyes — can cause allergic skin reactions, such as an itchy rash at the tattoo site. This can occur even years after you get the tattoo.
o Skin infections. A skin infection is possible after tattooing.
o Other skin problems. Sometimes an area of inflammation called a granuloma can form around tattoo ink. Tattooing also can lead to keloids — raised areas caused by an overgrowth of scar tissue.
o Bloodborne diseases. If the equipment used to create your tattoo is contaminated with infected blood, you can contract various bloodborne diseases — including methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), hepatitis B and hepatitis C.
o MRI complications. Rarely, tattoos or permanent makeup might cause swelling or burning in the affected areas during magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) exams. In some cases, tattoo pigments can interfere with the quality of the image.
Rest assured however, we take every precaution to ensure your health and safety is looked after. We are licenced by Renfrewshire Council, and as such we have strict hygiene processes we adhere to. It is also important that you are open and honest in your pre-appointment health questionnaire as this will bring any relevant issues to our attention.
Tattoos generally take a few weeks to heal. Full aftercare instructions will be given before you go home from the studio, and we will be there to answer any questions you may have during the healing process.
We are located at 12 Forbes Place in the town centre of Paisley. Information on parking and public transport can be found here.
Alterations to an agreed design can be accommodated, but we ask you give as much notice as possible to allow the artist time to redesign. More substantial changes, for example changing the design entirely to something completely new, this may be possible but may result in the cost changing, or the new design not being in the artist's chosen area of expertise.
Prices vary depending on the artist, subject to their experience. There are other variables too such as the size of the design and the time it will take. Once you have given the artist the details of your desired design, they will quickly be able to provide you with a no obligation quote.
Gift vouchers are available to purchase in any amount you wish. These are available to buy in the studio or buy clicking here
We're happy for numbing cream to be used. Only buy a reputable brand and purchase from the company directly (see below). We ask that you do a patch test to make sure you're not allergic. Please follow the instructions and DO NOT leave on for any longer than suggested. If you arrive at the studio with a reaction to the cream we may need to cancel the session. Please also be aware of counterfeit numbing creams.
Yes.
The UK doesn't have any specific regulations regarding ashes being added in to tattoo ink, however we're reluctant to do this as it increases risk of infection. For this reason we highly recommend using "Cremation Ink" who specialize in incorporating the ashes of your loved one into tattooing ink in a safe and sterile manner.
